I had never previously heard of the story, but it was apparently influential enough to inspire about half a dozen film adaptations, of which it would seem that this 1967 one, from Russia, was the most faithful.

I watched this movie years ago on the recommendation of Michael Cisco, loved it, never managed to write about it. I have the weird feeling that I may have watched a YouTube rip without subtitles. It didn't matter. It was gorgeous. I am so glad you liked it.
