But it's still a distorted picture - because (and this matters) where is the data on video games by perpetrator?

Again, without some data, hard to say. Again, an extreme hypothetical example - the government put something in the water which virtually prevents violence. But it doesn't work on video game players. So, all the homicides are from video game players. What does that say?

Less extreme example - the homicide rate amongst gang members continues to climb (true). Is it the case that violent gang bangers are more prone to being influenced by video games?

There is no data. Therefore there can be no useful conclusions.
