Weekend update

Spent much of Saturday with [livejournal.com profile] cvirtue, [livejournal.com profile] metageek and the twins. I book-geeked with the adults and -- eventually -- played with the children. The play had to wait a few hours, though, until the screaming died down. For some reason, whenever I first show up, the twins seem to think I'm The Devil or something. At any rate, they carry on and scream and cry for a considerable time, before eventually getting used to me. Disturbing, but I don't know anything I can do about it, other than Not Be Evil.

Spent a good chunk of the weekend playing the strangely-named Culdcept on the PS2. It's a bizarre Japanese hybrid between Magic the Gathering and, of all things, Monopoly! It's enjoyable, and surprisingly deep. Not short, though, as most matches take upwards of an hour. Hence I only really have time to play it on weekends.

Finished re-reading A Civil Campaign to [livejournal.com profile] kestrell. Also finished re-reading Shards of Honor myself. I don't think I previously noticed that the pilot that Cordelia cons into getting her off-planet at the end was named "Mayhew". Any relation to the drifter that Miles adopts in The Warrior's Apprentice?

Had some interesting dreams last night. "lucid dreaming" takes on new forms when you're working as a game designer. Often, when a dream doesn't seem to be going the way I'd like it to, I'll just halt it, fire up the editor, make a few changes, and try running it again.

Hugo nominees are out

The nominees for the 2003 Hugos (and the Retro Hugos for 1953) are out. My reading last year paid off, as I actually recognize a fair chunk of the entries. I may even have read some of the ones I don't recognize, but if thy failed to make an impression on me to that extent, I certainly won't vote for them.
