Weekend update

Spent much of Saturday with [livejournal.com profile] cvirtue, [livejournal.com profile] metageek and the twins. I book-geeked with the adults and -- eventually -- played with the children. The play had to wait a few hours, though, until the screaming died down. For some reason, whenever I first show up, the twins seem to think I'm The Devil or something. At any rate, they carry on and scream and cry for a considerable time, before eventually getting used to me. Disturbing, but I don't know anything I can do about it, other than Not Be Evil.

Spent a good chunk of the weekend playing the strangely-named Culdcept on the PS2. It's a bizarre Japanese hybrid between Magic the Gathering and, of all things, Monopoly! It's enjoyable, and surprisingly deep. Not short, though, as most matches take upwards of an hour. Hence I only really have time to play it on weekends.

Finished re-reading A Civil Campaign to [livejournal.com profile] kestrell. Also finished re-reading Shards of Honor myself. I don't think I previously noticed that the pilot that Cordelia cons into getting her off-planet at the end was named "Mayhew". Any relation to the drifter that Miles adopts in The Warrior's Apprentice?

Had some interesting dreams last night. "lucid dreaming" takes on new forms when you're working as a game designer. Often, when a dream doesn't seem to be going the way I'd like it to, I'll just halt it, fire up the editor, make a few changes, and try running it again.

I think it is the same guy - they're even both named Arde. It's interesting that the connection is never mentioned otherwise, but it may just be that Bujold didn't care to retcon.

I think you are mis-remembering. In my copy, he's just called "Pilot Officer Mayhew", no first name. It's unsurprising that Cordelia wouldn't bring it up, as she wouldn't have seen him for ~35 years, and probably doesn't even remember him that well. I expect (if it is the same person) that Arde remembers *her* pretty well, as he probably got in a fair amount of hot water for helping her. Perhaps a bit embarassing to bring up decades later (in Winterfair Gifts), though. On the other hand, bringing the connection on-stage in TWA would have been unnecessary, potentially confusing, and have highlighted a Big Coincidence, which the rather overloaded plot did not need another of.

I think Cordelia knows, because at some point (Memory?) it's mentioned that they read a huge chunk of Miles' reports to Illyan. I'm sure it's the same fellow. Not only the name, but he is a freighter jump pilot and then when Cordelia's son is 20, technology has passed him by and that's why he's on the skids.

Not the Devil

For those of you reading along, Alexx is the only adult the kids scream with at present. I just don't understand. They were even upset when I told them that he would be coming to visit.

Yes, well, Alexx's father used to have that same effect on some kids. At the time we thought it was the beard, which was less common then than nowadays. But maybe it's something genetic ;)
