May Day

May Day was a very schizophrenic day for me. Some very good times, but also a lot of not-so-good.

Managed to get a ride at the last minute with [livejournal.com profile] new_man and Morwenna. Always good to see them. Discovered during the ride that [livejournal.com profile] new_man had done even less prep for the Storytellers Guild meeting than I had, which made me fell very ambivalent. On the one hand, it made me look better, but on the other, it made me annoyed at him. But we had a fair amount of good comic-book-geeking on the drive.

On arrival, ran into [livejournal.com profile] cvirtue, [livejournal.com profile] metageek and the twins. In this strange environment, they did not scream at my presence, but they did immediately hide. Elizabeth did so by crawling under mommy's skirt, which was astoundingly cute :-) [livejournal.com profile] hungrytiger also showed up, for the first time in ages, along with his lovely wife, and their brand-new daughter.

Spent a while hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] juldea, which is always nice. Had some... enlightening conversations with her over the course of the day. Also, I apparently missed quite a treat by not seeing the outfit she wore to the Wadsworth House party the previous night :-) She had dragged her sweetie, [livejournal.com profile] londo to the event, despite his expectations of boredom. He was looking forward to hearing me tell stories, however, and that was flattering.

In mid-afternoon, a lot of the Cool People vanished for a few hours for an Intercon meeting, which was also happening on the Brandeis campus.

I eventually got tired of waiting for the Storyteller's meeting to officially start, so I just started telling stories to [livejournal.com profile] juldea. As often happens, a meeting quickly crystallized around that, with two more storytellers and a number of eager audience showing up. Sadly, before much time passed, the rain started up, and we fled for shelter. Well, some of us fled for shelter, but others waited out the (as it happened) brief shower. The meeting dissolved in water, and never re-crystallized. The concept of having Storytellers meetings at events has not, I think, been entirely disproven. On the other hand, I think leaving the scheduling entirely to chance was not such a great plan.

Eventually, the skies opened up in earnest, and the event retreated to Sherman dining hall. I had hopes of storytelling happening, but Court was just about to get underway, so the timing seemed poor. I wasn't in the mood for court, so decided to sit out. I very nearly grabbed [livejournal.com profile] londo out with me, as I still hadn't gotten to tell him a story, and he'd mentioned that he probably would be bored by court. But I thought to myself, "Nah, it's just a Baronial Curt, and those are always pretty short." Famous Last Words. I was moping about in the hall for over an hour. Gah. It did mean that I got to spend some time socializing with [livejournal.com profile] bess and Ira (Ira was a little overwhelmed by all the Vivat!s, so [livejournal.com profile] bess took him out).

The Commedia show was good, though not their strongest. Rhonwen was amazingly sexy, Christian was delightfully evil, and [livejournal.com profile] new_man had some good bits as "King Arlecchino". The intermezzi were sung by the beautiful and talented [livejournal.com profile] shprintzah, and came close to overshadowing the commedia troupe, they were so good.

After the show, the event was over. There was much talk of going out for food, and maybe post-revel. I had decidedly mixed feelings about the post revel; on the one hand, I wanted to go, but on the other, I wanted to behome at a decent hour, both for general sleep-like activity, and to see [livejournal.com profile] kestrell before she fell asleep. Decided on home. But by the time I'd reached that decision, [livejournal.com profile] new_man had arranged to go out with a bunch of folks for sushi. Unbeknownst to him, sushi restaurants make me ill. In the end, I ended up getting a ride to Alewife with Kobyashi.

I did get home in time to spend a while cuddling with the wife, so that was good. But then I had nightmares most of the night, and woke up feeling exhausted, even after 11 hours of sleep. I wonder if going to May Day brought all sorts of old memories/trauma near the surface of my brain. The nightmares did include a lot of elements that haven't shown up in my dreams for years...

Heh. I apologize that I didn't enlighten earlier - I made that decision/realization several months ago - I didn't know that I had left the situation unresolved.

No apology necessary. If it had been very important, I'd have asked earlier. And if I'd had to bet, I'd have have bet the correct answer. But it's still worth checking assumptions every once in a while. "If you don't ask, the answer's 'no' by default." :-)
