Angel speculation

So, I went downstairs a little while ago, and housemates were watching a rerun of Angel that had Angel angsting about Darla carrying his child.

Now, I have seen very little of seasons 3 and 4, but I have heard a fair amount of synopsis. Those of you who stayed with it, please help me out here. Just how much authority is there that Darla's child was actually fathered by Angel? Is there any such source that isn't either Eeeeevile, highly interested in manipulating Angel's emotions/actions, or both?

I mean, when Darla showed up pregnant, didn't everyone make a big deal about how vampires aren't supposed to be able to become pregnant? So isn't it a simpler explanation to suppose that she was impreganted when she was (quite recently before that) temporarily human? That supposes that a fetus can, in at least some sense, "survive" the vamping of the mother, but that seems to me to be less of a stretch than that a pair of undead could suddenly conceive for no obvious reason.

Of course, when she was human, Darla didn't have sex with Angel. She had sex with Lindsey. Who is apparently back in the plot-mix again. Wouldn't it be Too Cool if his motivation turns out to be some kind of twisted fatherly love? And the emotional impact on Angel of realizing that he had several years of angst over, essentially, a lie -- well, that's just the kind of thing Joss loves inflicting on his heroes.

I don't actually think that they'd go in such a plot-heavy direction this season, but it's my favorite Pet Theory of the moment. Perhaps we'll get more evidence for or against when new episodes start up again -- next year. Fie upon long hiatuses.

My favorite Angel theory of th moment is that Angel and Spike will just come out of the goth closet and admit they are actually in a romantic comedy. I know the slashfiction is out there, can anyone point me to it? Of course, I can understand Angel's reluctance to admit that he is actually being cast in Cary Grant's role, though he has not of yet ended up tied to a piece of furniture (re Arsenic and Old Lace, Cary Grant tied up with all that pretty rope, happy sigh). Okay, so I'm digressing, but seriously, Spike and Angel's dialogue this season is true to romantic comedy form. I love the classics. It's kinda a sorry day when the straight contingent has to rely on Wesley for a romantic lead; sheesh, nice guys are so slow! It's a good thing I don't hang out with any nowadays.

Well, I think it's undeniable that Joss & company are both aware of, and playing up to, the slash audience.

On the other hand, they probably realize that nothing dooms an ongoing series faster than letting the sexual tension turn into an actual relationship. Happy endings are fine for movies, but they tend to be fatal to serialized television.

Hmm. Possible, but it doesn't feel right to me. Moreover, I actively hope you're wrong, because if Joss did go there, then he'd probably have to bring Connor back, and I'm actively dreading that prospect.

("I am AngstBoy! My superpowers are the ability to be miserable and broody at all times!" Not exactly Joss' deepest character ever...)

Me neither, really. It's based more around world-building logic than emotional logic, and that's not the way to bet with Mutant Enemy.

Moreover, I actively hope you're wrong, because if Joss did go there, then he'd probably have to bring Connor back,
Doesn't necessarily follow, depending on how it played out.

and I'm actively dreading that prospect.

Heh. Haven't seen any of his non-baby appearances yet myself. (Not that this makes me terribly eager to...)

Now you're showing the right attitude. Many people spent essentially all of last season praying that he would get killed. The end result wasn't quite that final, but on the emotional level seems to indicate that he shouldn't come back...
