The navigation thing seems cheesy, but then again I sort of pride myself on my skill at that sort of thing, and I suppose it makes it accessible to people who aren't so hot at that but still want to enjoy the game.
It became clear to me near the end of my session with that game that the road system was complex enough that there was *frequently* a better "off-road" route than that offered by the GPS, so skill still gets rewarded.
I think I'd rate Dead Rising "still better designed than Star Control 2."

Also, controlling for "state of the art at the time of publication" makes a big difference. Your complaints about SC2, while they have some validity, were not unusual at the time. My complaints about DR are mostly about bad ideas that the industry as a whole left behind over a decade ago.
