In happier news, it has, overall, been a Very Merry Christmas, Indeed!
Had a nice get-together with my folks, of a comfortably brief length. They're both doing well health-wise, and dad is starting to noticably slim down. They got
kestrell some even-sillier-than-usual talking animals. One was a talking teddy bear that actually has some rudimentary speech recognition, and will hold a conversation with you. OK, so it's a bizarre and disturbing conversation, but it's still a pretty neat gizmo.
I was very happy to have thought of a great Kestrell-gift. She's always lusted after a Babylon 5 Ranger style "pocket quarterstaff". I went to some online magic stores, and tracked down a collapsible, instantly-expanding magic wand, in a nice silvery metal. Not quite as big (or hefty) as Marcus' stick, but it's a fun approximation.
I was particularly happy to receive a Buffy Season 5 set, and The Two Towers "geeky edition" as I refer to it :-)
Back at home, got lots of gaming presents, all of which look Way Cool. Stayed up late last night playing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
Christmas Dinner was, as per usual, spectacular. Good food, and great conversation. The overriding theme of the evening seemed to be, "Have you read/seen X? No? Oh, but you *must*!" I'm used to that happening when hanging out with new borough folk, but it was a little odd (though not at all unpleasant) to have it happen with a crowd whom I have mostly known for 5-10 years. I ended up loaning out a few books and DVDs to do my part in mutual filling-of-educational-holes :-)
LiveJournal and physical parties continue to interact in interesting ways. LJ remains a popular conversation topic in and of itself, and often impinges on other conversations as well (especially if some of the people in the room have already started having a particular conversation on LJ, and others haven't). I made sure to see the latest installment of Lord ot the Rings before Xmas, because for the last two years, it was the main topic of conversation at all the holiday parties. At Xmas Dinner this year, it was barely touched on, perhaps because we had mostly *had* that conversation on LJ. It will be interesting to see if the same holds true for Buttery New Year...
