I've been meaning to mention this one for a while, but forgetting. It's a Christmas present, ostensibly from the Freidmans to the Courtneys, but I'm the one in the house who uses it most. It's The Best Can Opener Evar (this link is to Amazon.co.uk, but I presume it can be found stateside if you look hard enough).

Unlike every other can opener I've ever seen, this one doesn't actually cut; it disassembles. It operates pretty much like a standard can opener, but once it's done, you have a can, and you have a lid, and neither of them have sharp edges! Also, no annoying lip for the food to get caught on. It even works on those stupid "pull-top" cans; just removes the whole annoying assemblage.

As Cariadoc said, when presenting it, "It's one of those things that is clearly impossible, yet nonetheless works." For anyone who opens cans often, I can't recommend this widget enough.
