There was gaming at my place yesterday, but I ended up not really taking part. This was partially because I missed the start of the first round of games, due to having an opportunity to rescue [livejournal.com profile] kestrell (she went to meet a friend, but was stood up). But in hindsight, and after some introspection, I find that the real reason I didn't take part is that I don't actually like board gaming very much any more.

I talked about this some with [livejournal.com profile] heroftheage this morning, and managed to articulate some of what's going on in my head. Board gaming is a poor compromise between two activities, each of which I greatly prefer. If I want to socialize, I don't want the game getting in the way. If I want to play, I have a huge pile of not-yet-played computer games, that won't make me wait for oher people to take their turns. Vis pointed out that human opponents can be better than AI opponents, which is true. But since these days I'm going far more for breadth than depth in my gaming experiences, it's not terribly relevant.

So I spent some time socializing with [livejournal.com profile] ricevermicelli and Kes (and, at least briefly, with the gamers). But I spent most of the evening playing computer games.
