New Years

Had an excellent New Year's Eve party at the Buttery. Much more fun than last year -- not sure why. Something subtly different about the mix of people, perhaps.

[livejournal.com profile] kestrell decided to try and last until ten o'clock this year, and achievd her goal -- if only barely :) As has become traditional, I took her home, and then returned to the party.

From my point of view, one of the main functions of a Buttery party is flirting with pretty ladies. The party was a smashing success in that regard. Even got some flirting from unexpected quarters -- yay hard cider ;)

The cacophony at midnight was Most Excellent.

After midnight, there occurred a spontaneous Color War in the parlor. Quite by chance, I, [livejournal.com profile] 43duckies, and JJ were sitting in a row, all wearing bright red. Across the room, [livejournal.com profile] rufinia and [livejournal.com profile] juldea were wearing green, and two people on the sofa were wearing black. So whenever anyone new entered the room, one of the three teams claimed them (or they were consigned to the plaid corner). [livejournal.com profile] fibro_witch was wearing black, but had ruby slippers on, so we decided she had to stretch out so her top stayed with the black team, but her feet were with the red team. Juldea noticed that, under her shirt, Rufinia was wearing a red bra; after some accusations of treachery, Rufinia was actually convinced to take it off! The red team then tried to claim the red bra, but to no avail. We tried to trade all the green things we could find, as collateral, including a five dollar bill, but Rufinia wouldn't budge.

Later yet, I spent a while watching a game of Apples to Appples, while exchanging backrubs with JJ. Eventually went home around 2, bringing [livejournal.com profile] londo and [livejournal.com profile] juldea back with me to crash at Melville Keep. We were pretty full -- 14 people!

Slept until one in the afternoon -- bliss! When I got dressed, I chose a shirt in honor of the previous night's Color War: a black shirt with an image of a Wicked Witch's green hands reaching for the Ruby Slippers.

After playing a bit of WoW, I went back to the Buttery. Spent some time chatting with (and giving a backrub to) [livejournal.com profile] ricevermicelli, who I haven't seen in far too long. So far, pregnancy seems to be agreeing with her.

The spaghetti feed was as good as ever, but I was feeling pretty tired by that time so headed home soon after. Happy New Year everyone!

Some people with too much time and money on their hands get more than one computer with its own World of Warcraft account, and play multiple characters at once. There's one man who has taken this to an extreme, and has a full party of five - 4 Mages and a Priest. Since they are separate computers and accounts, and since a live human being is operating each one (essentially) simultaneously, this is all considered completely legit. A completely legit team that can keep itself healed while dealing out literally thousands of poiints of Area of Effect damage per second. Once every three minutes, the team can deliver 16,000 points of damage to a single target, and there are no players (and few NPCs) who can stand up to that. This is the most incredible hack (in the complimentary sense) that I have seen in ages.

Here's an interview with him, including links to many videos.

(Tip o' the hat to Henry Jenkins' column in CGM for alerting me to this phenomenon.)
