The MBTA is, slowly, entering the 21st century. They now have a system that lets you subscribe to email alerts about service problems on specific lines, with a decent amount of customization options. The address to sign up is http://www.talerts.com/SubscribeAlerts.aspx.

I have to say that the new Google Maps powered website they debuted a year or so again is fantastic. I was in NYC this past weekend and the MTA site absolutely blows in comparison.
