Angel speculation

alexxkaySo, I went downstairs a little while ago, and housemates were watching a rerun of Angel that had Angel angsting about Darla carrying his child.
Now, I have seen very little of seasons 3 and 4, but I have heard a fair amount of synopsis. Those of you who stayed with it, please help me out here. Just how much authority is there that Darla's child was actually fathered by Angel? Is there any such source that isn't either Eeeeevile, highly interested in manipulating Angel's emotions/actions, or both?
I mean, when Darla showed up pregnant, didn't everyone make a big deal about how vampires aren't supposed to be able to become pregnant? So isn't it a simpler explanation to suppose that she was impreganted when she was (quite recently before that) temporarily human? That supposes that a fetus can, in at least some sense, "survive" the vamping of the mother, but that seems to me to be less of a stretch than that a pair of undead could suddenly conceive for no obvious reason.
Of course, when she was human, Darla didn't have sex with Angel. She had sex with Lindsey. Who is apparently back in the plot-mix again. Wouldn't it be Too Cool if his motivation turns out to be some kind of twisted fatherly love? And the emotional impact on Angel of realizing that he had several years of angst over, essentially, a lie -- well, that's just the kind of thing Joss loves inflicting on his heroes.
I don't actually think that they'd go in such a plot-heavy direction this season, but it's my favorite Pet Theory of the moment. Perhaps we'll get more evidence for or against when new episodes start up again -- next year. Fie upon long hiatuses.
