Spent last night in the guest room. Sleep quality was not optimal, but way better than I've been getting, and quantity was good. Was down for about 13 hours -- which still leaves me in debt, but has me coherent enough to come to work. Brief interruption around 2:00 A.M. by a noisy mouse.

Ordered some fancy noise-cancelling headphones from Bose special delivery. They're expensive, but worth it if they work, and they have a 30-day money back guarantee. If they don't work, I'm living in the guest room for a while.

A coworker assures me with confidence that humming in this kind of heating system is caused by air in the pipes, and that it is straightforward to bleed it out. Unfortunately, it seems futile to do so until the probable *cause* of that air bleeding is removed. All of Melville Ave is under construction to replace the main water delivery pipes, and for the time being, water is coming to our house through a temporary pipe/hose arrangement. It seems likely that this is where the air bubbles got in.

Headphones: overkill?

Probably too late, but: a plain old hearing protection set (like construction workers use) might be cheaper. However, I suspect you bought the headphones because you wanted good headphones, or else you would've gotten something cheaper than Bose. :-)

Bose headphones are *comfy*. I tend to change position a lot during the night, often sleeping on my side. I need headphones that are cushioned enough to do that.

I am hoping that this will be an overall better solution to general ambient noise interfering with sleep issues as well. Headphones and a white noise machine help, but only to a limited degree. When construction vehicles start up at 7 AM when I want to sleep until 10, I'd like to have more a potent solution.

There is that. My noise-cancelling Koss headphones are pretty comfy for normal use, but I wouldn't want to sleep in them.

There are pillow speakers, but that still leaves one ear unaccounted for.....

Yah. My white noise machine came with one of those, but I never even considered it as a viable option.

It seems unlikely the air came from the water main construction. The furnace should only be getting water from the incoming water pipes very occasionally, to top off the amount in the system. Sometimes this is done automatically, sometimes manually (I don't recall what you have). If you have air in the system, it is likely done manually.

Yes, the mouse. I'd heard it Sunday night, meant to tell someone, but had forgotten about it by morning. What the heck is it doing to produce SO much noise??

Well, when I heard it, it was rooting around in the corner of a loosely-filled garbage bag, so there was lots of plastic to rattle around. I *thought* that bag was full merely of discarded sewing supplies, but he obviously thought there was something interesting in there.

Keep in mind that bleeding the air from the system may be pretty easy. Depends on the radiators in question, but doing it for our old house was only about ten minutes' work, and easy work at that. So if that's the problem, it's probably a good time-investment, even if it has to be occasionally repeated...

Heh. You are several installments behind on this particular saga. Which (knock wood) might just have reached a conclusion today. Or not. Stay tuned...
