The BOSE headphone look spiffy, are comfy, produce great sound -- and actually make things *worse*. While wearing them, I cannot consciously hear the hum any more. But my hindbrain appears to be reacting to both the original hum *and* its cancellation wave, so the anxiety reaction was even more pronounced. I tried it for about 30 minutes before giving up, and was still wired and jumpy for hours afterward. So those will get sent back.

Another night in the guest room. Didn't sleep very well, but slightly better than I would have in my own room (I think).

I've asked M and [livejournal.com profile] herooftheage to get a plumber to Deal With It. I breifly considered trying to do something about it myself, but my housemates convinced me that this was not the path of wisdom.

I don't know if we're getting a plumber here today or tomorrow, but I expect one of the two. I am still not very intelligible over the phone, so I pinged Mara to make the call.

Have you tried cotton balls? They wouldn't be a great long-term solution, but the might help you get by until the plumber can come.

Not lately, but I doubt that they would help. I do have earplugs that I use pretty routinely to help ward off birdsong, and they have no effect on the Hum Of Doom. Sounds of this frequency come in through the bones, not just the ears.

Oof. Yeah, that would be harder. You'd have to bury your whole body in fabric, and breathe through some kind of snorkel (CPAP?). I'm sure you can find people from whom to borrow enough fabric to bury you. ;-)

Weird, cool, intriguing, and discouraging all at the same time.
