Well, now I have some cause to sympathize somewhat more with [livejournal.com profile] greatsword's recent unpleasant experience. Had a little trip to the emergency room last night. Nothing life-threatening, but [livejournal.com profile] kestrell was in severe back pain, for no obvious reason.

The Big Dig (and Boston topology in general) thwarted my navigation efforts several times, and then we got caught in post-game traffic, so it was almost midnight by the time we got to Cambridge Hospital.

As emergency room visits go, it was pretty good. Service was courteous and efficient; not lightning fast, but better than average. They tried one medication that didn't seem to do much, then basically decided to give her a short-term prescription for, essentially, knock-out pills, so she could sleep.

The fellow in the next bed was in a lot more pain than Kes. He had been cooking up some creme brulee, and had accidentally dipped his hand into some hot sugar. Yow!

We got out at about 1:40 AM, and were home by 2:15. I didn't get lost on the trip home, though it was close a few times. The signs for the 93 Detour were classic Boston signage. Half of them were arrows pointing exactly down the middle of a fork in the road. I suppose I must be picking up some navigational skills, as I seem to have picked the right fork each time...

Kes and I both slept OK. After last night, though, I don't think it would be wise for me to go to the Greenwood Isle picnic. Which is a shame, since the weather is perfect for it. Ah well, I presume they'll have fun without me.

We may go to the doctor tomorrow if she's still in pain. If I'm not at the Masked Ball, that's why. I do still hope to make it, though. Got my class notes all set. Even have a token mask, courtesy of Kes.

Kes and I shared some hospital nostalgia. When she had her final eye surgery a few years back, I visited her in the hospital and held her hand. Apparently no one had ever done that for her before. I didn't know that at the time. I did know, then, that I felt strongly enough about this woman to want to marry her, though it was a good deal later before I actually raised the subject. Happily, successfully :-)
