Great list! In fact, all the lists I've seen so far would make a marvelous "book discussion group". Compile them, and you've got a lifetime reading list!

I couldn't pluck out one Pinkwater book to list, but his works as a whole were probably the most influential on my childhood. And of course are still great in adulthood.

A sign of excellent character!

I'm pretty sure Lizard Music was the first one I discovered, and it had a pretty huge impact on me. Of almost equal weight would be Alan Mendelson, The Boy From Mars and Young Adult Novel.

More recently, I have been getting great pleasure by giving (and reading) his polar bear picture books to cvirtue's twins. I especially like Bongo Larry and Bad Bear Detectives.

How old were you when you encountered "The Romance of Lust"? I missed that one. . .both in life and the first time I read your list.
Check out the reviews on Amazon--they're a scream. Someone who says "this is illegal to read in my country" thanks the anonymous author for inspiring him to learn English, and now he's an English teacher. He must have a, well, interesting vocabulary.

I'm horrible at time-based memory, but I would guess around 15 or 16. I still enjoy rereading it from time to time.

As for vocabulary, it was books like this that taught me the word "gamahuche" :-)
