Haven't posted much lately. Work has been extremely busy (in a good way), and I'm not in the habit of posting from home. There's usually something I want to do more. But, here's some snippits from the last few weeks.
Amusing turn of phrase, spotted in an otherwise unimpressive story ("Louise's Ghost", by Kelly Link). A woman talking to a friend of hers, describing a new beau: "He's smitten. I've smited him."
Giving backrubs is fun. Having backrubds be appreciated is fun. But having a pretty girl say, immediately upon seeing me, "Oooh! Alexx! Can I have a backrub!", is egoboo on top of fun :-) It could conceivably get annoying after the thousandth time or so, but I'm willing to take the experiment.
Saw 28 Days Later on cable t'other night. Sort of a cross betwen Day of the Triffids and Night of the Living Dead. Was one of the rare films where I honestly didn't know whether they were going for the happy ending or not. Doesn't have too much gore, but has a lot of jump-out-of-your-seat scares, aa well as generally mounting horror, as it gets harder and harder to distinguish between the protagonists and the 'zombies'. Recommended for fans of horror and/or end-of-the-world movies. [Incidentally, it was nominated for a Hugo. Not that it has much chance against the competition, but I think it's a worthy nominee, at least.]
Almost finished Dark Cloud 2 today. Points off for having a series of increasingly boss fights that last for about an hour between your last save point and the actual final boss. I *think* I was at the actually-truly-final boss when I got killed, but I didn't feel motivated to re-fight the preceding hour just yet.
kestrell's computer is Mostly Dead. In theory, it could be revived, but the prospects look sufficiently bleak that I'm going for a full replacement. Many of its parts were 3 years old, so it was getting near time anyways. Will hopefully pick her new machine up from the shop at the same time that I get my (repaired) one back. It's worrisome to both be down to our backup computers at once.
I now have five not-currently-functioning computers in my room, and Kes has another one in her closet. On Of These Days, I intend to salvage parts, and build 2 or 3 low-spec machines out of the remains, to use as file servers, or retro-gaming machines (games from the final days of DOS in the early-to-mid-90's are often nigh-impossible to run on a modern OS, even under emulation). Just need to accumulate sufficient Round Tuits...
