Self-examination and Medical Issues

A combination of wifely nagging, supervisor nagging at work, and a sick day all in close proximity has moved me to finally start addressing some of my chronic health problems. I've made an appointment (for next week) with my GP to start the process off.
So why haven't I done this before? I recently had a minor epiphany about that.
siderea had a poll on her LJ a few days ago, asing about people's role models. One of mine -- by far the earliest role model I can remember -- is Mr. Spock. And what I learned from him suffered somewhat from the "do what I do, not what I say" problem. For all his claims to be "logical", he follows mind/body dualism to an illogical degree. He's an extremely stoic character, and is frequently shown dismissing major injuries or other health issues as unimportant. And he is frequently antagonistic to the one character who most represents the medical profession. These behaviors are usually, in a story sense, shown to be "wrong", but I appear to have latched onto them subconsciously as patterns to follow in my life.
This is all rather embarrassing. Hopefully, that embarrassment will prevent me from falling back into those patterns...
