Today is the last day of June, and therefore the official end of strawberry season. I got a typical-sized harvest this morning -- but got it by covering 3/4 of the garden, rather than the 1/3 I was managing in the same amount of time last week. Tomorrow, I'll probably cover the whole garden, and get less. I'll probably stop harvesting entirely by the weekend.
Thanks to all who came and picked strawberries, thus helping reduce the ongoing tragedy of strawberry wastage.
Note to self for next year: Be more aggressive in encouraging people to come pick. Lots of people don't seem to believe the first several statements of the form, "Anyone is welcome to come pick strawberries during June." We got a few takers this year, but only a few, and late in the season. We could easily have supported three times as many guests without lowering our own take at all.
