Strawberry thoughts

Last night, I accomplished all my goals. Various goodies delivered to various people. Lots of adulation from cute females for being the source of fresh strawberries :-) Heck, I even danced a little...
Long walk home afterward, through the thunderstorm. Was warm enough to be almost pleasant, though I did get pretty thoroughly drenched. Black dye from my sneakers leached not only onto my socks, but even onto some toes! Nice pyrotechnics, though.
Got a decent crop of strawberries this morning. We're not up to "gallon-a-day" levels yet, but they're doing their best to make up for lost time.
Our gardener has been very remiss in his weeding duties. In previous years, I took them on myself, but I haven't got time any more, what with a more active work schedule (even harvesting is really more time than I *should* spend). Some plants that I used to mentally classify as "fuzzy weeds", if left to grow up fully, turn out to be sharp and prickly. On the other hand, my worries about the weeds overcompeting with the strawberries seem to be ill-founded. I forgot that strawberries evolved in such an environment. They *do* spend energy getting themselves taller that might have been spent on more fruit -- but that actually means that fewer strawberries rot due to ground contact, so it's really rather a wash.
Last night's rain made the ecosystem very happy. I cleared out over a dozen snails this morning. Also spotted my first snakeskin of the season. Still haven't seen any actual snakes, but they're clearly about.
Tonight, off to the theater, on
