So these fillings I got a few weeks ago. They still hurt whenever they encounter anything that isn't body temperature (cool water, warm soup). And sometimes they just start aching for no obvious reason. I haven't had fillings before -- is this normal? If not, does anyone know what is likely to be going on, and what I should do about it?

I've had that happen before and was told that it's not that uncommon when the filling had to be close to or touching a nerve ending. After a while (a few weeks maybe?) it started to happen less and less and eventually stopped altogether.

Brushing with Sensodyne sometimes helps.

Yeah, it's likely just a nerve inflamed/agitated by close-by drilling vibrations. If you want a temporary otc fix until it goes away by itself, I'd recommend Ibuprofen, which is what my dentist told me to take.

If it doesn't go away after a month or so, go back to the dentist.

What They All Said about the first few 2-3 weeks. If pain and sensitivity persist, it's possible that your fillings (like my recent one) haven't been finished as cleanly as they should be, and the filling surface isn't meeting the surface of the opposite tooth properly. It took my dentist two separate occassions, about five minutes of actual work each time, to do the necessary microplaning adjustments for a proper bite fit.

Kes says, btw, that I'm supposed to tell you about the dentist Sue and I both trust: Seligman, currently on Beacon St in Brookline but moving offices in a month or so to Washington St in Roxbury. He and the staff actually do pay attention to what a person says.

Mine also took a few months to get used to, with cold being the worst offender. To this day cold can still give me a good blow if it hits in just the right spot. I'm not sure if it's just desensitizing, or also learning to make sure offending items touch those teeth as little as possible.
